Blue Goes Green grant makes changes this semester

Utah State University's Blue Goes Green committee introduced a new grant category earlier this semester.

According to USU's sustainability coordinator Alexi Lamm, applications for small grants are now being accepted on a rolling basis. This allows students applying for a grant under $1,500 to do so anytime throughout the semester instead of waiting for the bi-annual deadline.

"With this new change, grants of $1,500 or more will only be reviewed and awarded during the spring," Lamm said.

After collaborating with representatives from University of Utah's green grant program, USU's BGG committee decided to implement the mini-grants to increase the number of applications as well as offer support to students with smaller-scale projects said Viviane Baji, a student sustainability office intern.

"If students want to get started right away, it's better if they can get their funding earlier," Baji said. "Now they don't have to wait until the end of the semester to submit their ideas."

In 2011 students at Utah State University approved the 25 cent per credit fee that funds the sustainability-focused grant. Since then more than 25 grants have been awarded to USU students to help fund projects ranging from a campus composting site to water bottle filling stations.

Grant applications and more information can be found on the Blue Goes Green website.
